John Stuart Cole was born to Timothy Tyler Cole and Hannah Stuart on April 9, 1806 in Tompkins Co., NY. He married Rowena Harrington on Jan 11, 1830 at Howard, Stueben Co., NY.

In October of 1834 John and Rowena moved to Cleveland, Ohio.

In 1838 he served in the Patriot's War-McKenzie's Rebellion in Canada where he was wounded in the knee.

John and Rowena moved to Powesheik Co. Iowa in 1859.

At the age of 56 years old John joined the Union Army for Civil War service as a volunteer. In 1862 John Stuart Cole enlisted in Company D, 37th Iowa Volunteers a.k.a the "Iowa Graybeards". This regiment was made up of soldiers aged 45 and over. John would die while in service to his country.
