Andrew Blackburn Ballard was 7 years old when his father died from wounds in a Gallipolis, OH hospital. His father died from the wounds he had received in a battle at Cross Keys, VA during the Civil War. There were two other children Sarah 5 and James 2 at the time of their fathers death. Their mother Evaline married William H Abbott and lived at Dry Creek, WV. William H Abbott was a comrade of Andrew's father during the war. Both Andrew and William Abbott were 1st Sargent's in their regiment. Andrew married Nancy Caroline Wills on April 28, 1876 and they lived at Dry Creek. In 1888 two of their children died with diphtheria and another died in 1893 from fever. In 1894 they lost another child at birth. In 1910 Andrew and Caroline lived at Dry Creek, WV but by 1920 they had moved to Promise, Oregon. There in Promise, they raised the remainder of their children. Andrew and his wife Caroline died in Promise, OR.
