Irene Brockwell, 79, a longtime resident of the Wenatchee Valley, went to be with her Savior on Wednesday, April 19, 2000 at the Central Washington Hospital of Wenatchee.

She was born on June 17, 1920 at Union, AR to Stephen Thomas and Frances (Cargill) Caruthers. She grew up on a farm near Union, AR and graduated in 1938 from Salem High School as the class Valedictorian.

Irene married John Amos Brockwell on Dec. 29, 1940 in Arkansas. They lived in Brockwell, AR for a period of time where she and Amos farmed and operated a dry goods store. They also worked seasonally here in Washington State. They lived in Indianapolis, IN for one year and in 1953, the family moved to the Wenatchee Valley.

Mrs. Brockwell worked here locally with the Curtis Thriftway Grocery Store and with the Buttreys Grocery Store for several years. She worked primarily in the bakery departments with both of these stores and retired in 1985.

Mrs. Brockwell was a charter member of the Wenatchee Valley Baptist Church. She was actively involved in several aspects of the church, including the choir, a Sunday school teacher and had served on numerous church committees.

She enjoyed gardening and was noted for her wonderful cooking ability. Her three main "loves" in her life were her family, her home and her church. She touched several lives during her lifetime and will be greatly missed by all.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, John E. and Penny Brockwell of East Wenatchee, her son and daughter-in-law, Tom D. and Pat Brockwell of Malaga; her daughter, Margaret S. Brockwell of Bellevue; her five grandchildren, Clark Brockwell, Darren Goehner, Brian Brockwell, Justin Brockwell and Doug Brockwell; her four great-grandchildren, Michelle and Jacob Brockwell and Karlee and Kassidi Goehner; her brother, J.B. Caruthers of Salem, AR; her sister, Imogene Campbell of Salem, AR; her sister-in-law, Eunice Caruthers of Mountain Home, AR; and her numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, by her husband (Amos, 1977), by two brothers and by one sister.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held in memory of Irene Brockwell on Monday, April 24, 2000 at 1 p.m. at the Wenatchee Valley Baptist Church with Pastor Buddy Ellis officiating. Interment services will take place prior to the memorial service at the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in East Wenatchee at 11 a.m. the same day.
