Martha Ann Sanders Knight was born the daughter of William Hamilton Sanders and Elizabeth M. Hooper, some of the first settlers of Texas. She was born in Tennessee 18 Oct 1832 but by 1848 at age 16 married Thomas Jefferson Knight in Shelby County, Texas where her family then was living. Her father served in the Texas War of Independence in 1836 and received land grants part of which she later inherited after his death in 1855. She and Thomas had 11 children. A heart-felt letter she received from her husband during the Civil War was donated by Ronald Wade along with all of the Knight family archives to the East Texas History Center at Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches, Texas.
