Information from public sources including Samuel Penniman Bates' "History of Pennsylvania volunteers, 1861-5; prepared in compliance with acts of the legislature" states that John Barger of Philadelphia County was born about 1839 and enlisted as a Private on June 1 1861 in Company D, 26th Infantry Regiment Pennsylvania. He was discharged January 1, 1863, for wounds received at Williamsburg, Va. on May 5, 1862.
Pvt Barger re-enlisted into Company D, 29th Infantry Regiment and was transferred into the U.S. Veteran Reserve Corps. Sources vary on the dates of these actions.
Rest in Peace.
Extracted from censuses:
On the 1900 Philadelphia census, there is a John Barger at 314 Calvert Street in Philadelphia, day laborer, born December 1838. He is age 61 and living with his (relatively new) wife of 3 years, Mary Agnes, age 36, and his mother in law, Agnes Perkins. This sadly matches our deceased, whose last residence is the same address.
The following cannot be proven to be him at this time. Trying to trace him back, there is a man named "John S. Barger" on the 1880 census, age 41, the right age to be the same man yet not conclusive. He is listed as a foundry hand, living with wife Amanda age 35, son John S. age 18, and daughter Mary Murgatroyd, 15. They live at 417 W Dauphin Street, Philadelphia.
In 1860 Philadelphia, there is a John Barger, age 22, moulder, wife Matilda, age 18, and daughter Mary, 6 months old. Also living with them is Nicholas Barger (possibly a brother) age 23, and Rosanna Barger (a sister or perhaps Nicholas' wife), age 18. While his age is close to be right, as is his occupation, this too is not conclusive.
In 1850 in the Northern Liberties section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 12 year old John appears with his bricklayer father William and mother Mary, and siblings Elizabeth and Christiana.
