Charles H. Bickel, Jr., 82, of Mattoon, formerly of Arcola, passed away at 12:05 a.m. Sunday (April 20, 2008) at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center, Coles County.

Junior was born Feb. 26, 1926, in Arcola. He was a son of Charles Henry, Sr. and Beulah Catherine (Wilkins) Bickel. He married Doris June Bright in 1948. She passed away in 1959. He married Charlotte Stortzum Claxon in 1960 in Mattoon. She passed away March 18, 1997.

Survivors include one son, Jeff Bickel of Arthur; five daughters, Tina Bickel Girouard of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Vicki McGuffey and Billijean Powell, both of Mattoon, Peggy Edwards of Sidne and Johnna Howard of Sullivan; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one sister, Phyllis Gallagher of Tuscola; and special friend, Ellen Buege of Mattoon.

His parents, his wives and one brother, Bill Bickel, preceded him in death.

Junior graduated from Arcola High School with the class of 1944. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of VFW Post 7862, Arcola. Junior retired as a mill wright supervisor for Associated Services, Eustis, Fla. He was also a member of the First Christian Church of Arcola.

Junior enjoyed playing cards and putting puzzles together. He also liked to fish and camp, and he loved his family very much.
