Jennie was born in Balfron, Stirlingshire, Scotland, one of six children of Francis Paterson and Isabella Halbert. In 1891 the family immigrated to Vancouver where their two youngest sons were born.
Sadly, her mother Isabella died about 1895, soon after the birth of her youngest.
