Born in St. Louis County when it was truly the frontier, his father died when he was young and he went to live with his grandparents, James Braceknridge and Eva Hockersmith Brackenridge. He had many adventures, including going to the California gold fields with his uncle, Thomas Brackenridge. In 1852, he married his first wife, Minerva Hume and moved to St. Clair County, MO. Family lore stated Union troops burned down his home, and as a result his wife and two of this three children (George & Sarah) from his first wife died (daughter Minerva lived). He promptly joined the Confederate Army. After the war, he returned to the family farm in St. Louis County in Orrville, which is present day Wildwood, Missouri.
