Seaman Apprentice William Flores was posthumously awarded the Coast Guard Medal, the service's highest award for heroism in peacetime, in 2000, for his actions aboard the USCG Blackthorn in 1980. The Blackthorn, a Coast Guard buoy tender, capsized after a collision with a tanker near Tampa Bay, FL. SA Flores died as a result of that collision.

SA Flores opened the life jacket locker as the tender capsized, securing its hatch open with his belt. This action ensured that his shipmates were able to access and use the life jackets, saving countless lives. On the 20th anniversary of his death, SA Flores' family was presented with the Medal.

In October 2010, it was announced that the third new Sentinel-class fast response cutter, a 154 foot patrol boat, would be named for Flores.
