Businessman. A native of Canada, he was the son of Irish immigrants. He was educated at the common schools of Peterborough, Ontario and later attended the University of Toronto. Carew left school to become a clerk at a mercantile business until he moved to Detroit, Michigan where he found employment at a clothing business that was owned by his future business partner, C. R. Mabley. He soon became the company's manager and was sent by Mabley to Cincinnati, Ohio to operate a clothing company that became the Mabley and Carew Company. Carew purchased the business after Mabley's death in 1884. An affluent member of the community, Carew held several important positions and was presented with the "Golden Key of the City" by the Chamber of Commerce. A Freemason, Carew was also a trustee of the Cincinnati Southern Railway and director of banks and other establishments. He was a loyal Republican and a three time Presidential Elector from Ohio and chairman of the Ohio Electoral College. The Carew Tower in Cincinnati was named for him and at 49 stories, has been the tallest building in Cincinnati since its completion in 1931. He was the husband of Alice E. Stewart Carew and died at his residence in Walnut Hills near Cincinnati in 1914 when he was 65 years old.
