He enrolled September 7, 1861 at Callensburg, PA where the family was living and was mustered in as Corporal at Camp Orr, PA.
His enrollment card described him as being 6'1" tall with blue eyes, fair complexion and light hair.
On May 31, 1862, during the Battle of Fair Oaks or Seven Pines, Virginia, he was wounded in the leg which was amputated at Hygeia Hospital. He was put aboard the steamboat, Robert Fulton, to go to a military hospital in New York. He died on the boat. He was 30 years old.
