Longtime Valdez resident Hattie V. Allen, 108, died at the Palmer Pioneers' Home on July 17, 1995. Graveside services were held at the Valdez City Cemetery.

Mrs. Allen was born Sept. 29, 1886, in Orrock, Minn., to Andrew Kushman and Pauline Riese. She came to Valdez as a young woman in 1907 and remained there until 1982, when she entered the Palmer Pioneers' Home at the age of 96. Mrs. Allen was a housewife who loved to cook and care for others, do needlework, garden, pick berries and go fishing. After moving to Palmer, she began growing prize-winning tomatoes and took pride in the blue ribbons she earned when she entered them in the Alaska State Fair. Mrs. Allen received a centenarian award from Gov. Steve Cowper in 1986 and many birthday cards from the president of the United States. She was a featured important birthday person on NBC's ''Today Show.'' Mrs. Allen was preceded in death by her husband on Jan. 9, 1968.

She is survived by her close friends, Ronald and Teresa Bailey and family; Alex and Betty Binek Sr. and Tom Binek Jr. and family, all of Anchorage. Arrangements were handled by Kehl's Palmer Mortuary.
