James M. Allen

The funeral for James M. Allen, 80, of Byron, will be 2 p.m. Saturday, April 5, 2008, at Goodwin Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Gib Clark will officiate. Burial will be in Ware Cemetery with military rites by Ft. Sill military honors Army personnel. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. today, and 9 a.m. to service time at the funeral home.

He was born April 9, 1927, northeast of Byron to Orville E. and Ruth Spry Allen and died Tuesday, April 1, 2008, at Kansas Veterans Home.

As a young man, he helped his dad at Allen Grain Elevator. He graduated from Byron High School in 1945. He joined the military in 1945, serving as a mechanic at Lowery Air Field, Denver. He was honorably discharged in June 1947. He married Ethel Gransbury June 2, 1949. They made their home east of Byron, where they farmed and raised cattle. He worked for area farmers and at Kirkpatrick Sand and Gravel and Cherokee Sales Co. He also did carpenter and construction work. While in Enid, he did security work. He attended Union Valley Church, Vining Church and Amorita Church of Christ.

Surviving are three children, Ellen Knopf, David Allen and Dwaine Allen; three brothers, Emerson, Carroll and Delmar; one sister, Olive Hodgens; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother.

Memorials may be made through the funeral home to Ware Cemetery Fund or A & B Fire Department.
