Suffragist, author, nurse, and feminist. She was known for her outstanding contributions to nursing literature, including one of the first nursing textbooks, the Materia Medica for Nurses.

As a suffragist she was in the first group of suffragists arrested and jailed for picketing the White House. She was later arrested two more times and sentenced to time in Occoquan workhouse.
