Married Virginia "Ginny" Olliff.

Lewis Akins and Eliza Rigdon were married in 1860. Lewis was killed in the Civil War in 1862. The widowed Eliza gave birth to Laura Virginia Nichols out of wedlock in 1864. Laura was adopted by James Monroe Nichols who was her biological father, recently confirmed by DNA of descendants. Eliza gave birth to George Washington Akins out of wedlock in 1873. His biological father is unknown, but could not have been Lewis Akins although he bears the Akins surname. During this time frame there was a shortage of marrying age men due to the Civil War deaths. This resulted in many out of wedlock births in both the north and south.
