Born in Altleinigen, Germany, Philip left on 14 May 1881, sailed from Liverpool on 21 May 1881 aboard the "Wyoming" and arrived at the Port of New York City on 1 June 1881.

His mother, Elisabetha, died three months after Philip left for America. Philip was apprencticed as a brick and stone mason in Mannheim, Germany at the age of 14. After arriving in the U.S., he travelled throughout Utah, Idaho, and Montana with the building trade.

He lived in Ogden, Utah 1881-1891, then Providence, Utah from 1891 to 1909 when he moved to Nampa, Idaho. He was one of the stone masons on the Logan LDS Temple.

Philip was the husband of Isabella Johnson, married 26 January 1887; they had two children, Frank Philip and William Henry. Isabella died in 1891. Philip then married Louise Amanda Lehman Schoenhals on 20 May 1892 in Providence, Utah. She had two children by her first marriage. Philip and Louise had two more children, Moroni Henry and Blanche Kloepfer Carson.
