Karl Heinrich Brauning was born 26 Feb 1881 near Stuttgart, Wurttemberg, Germany. His parents were Jacob Wilhelm Brauning and Rosine Katharine Laepple who emmigrated with their four children to the United States in December 1883. Rosa's younger brother Friedrich Laepple had already emmigrated to Eudora, Douglas County, Kansas in April 1883. Incidently, Friedrich's wife, Christiana Sophia Brauning, was the younger sister of Jacob Wilhelm Brauning.
Karl Heinrich Brauning, was known by his friends as Henry. He was well liked and his life was shortened at age of seventeen by his untimely death.

"Henry and a group of boys (neighbors) hopped a train to ride to their nearest fishing hole. (Reportedly to go Ice Skating). The brakeman on the train mistook Henry for another man he hated, knocked him off the train, and he (Henry) was run over. He was a favored child, a fine young man, kind, thoughtful and considerate with everyone."
The tragic death of their son Henry was a terrible loss. Jacob Wilhelm, "William", had been farming for Governor Robinson since 1893 but their life was not easy. His wife Rosa Laepple Brauning and her brother Friedrich Laepple had witnessed other deaths in their close family. Another family member, their brother, Christian Laepple who arrived in Eudora, Kansas, about 1884 with his wife Wilhelmina and their young daughter Frida W Laepple experienced similar tragic ends. Wilhelmina Laepple died shorthly after the birth ot their first son Christian G Laepple in October 1888. The son, Christian, died on December 24, 1888. Frida, the only surviving child, died on 14 Nov 1895 in Eudora, Douglas Co., Kansas as the first victim of Diptheria. Friedrich Laepple and his wife and children left Kansas behind for Oklahoma City in 1893. Within the next few years Christian Laepple and the William Brauning family also moved to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to farm and homestead that land leaving Kansas behind.
