John G. Hill was born in Cumberland County, Tennessee, December 25, 1848. His parents were Thomas Hill and Virginia Washington Pryor. When he was a small boy, the family moved to Wayne County, Illinois where John G. grew to manhood. He was one of ten children.
On March 14, 1867, he married Amanda Marshall Shehorn who had two girls: Martha and Melvina, from a previous marriage. John G. and Amanda were the parents of Arabell, Susan, and Sarah Viola (Ollie).
In 1877 the Hills moved to Logan and took a homestead two miles north of town in sections 21 and 22.
On November 2, 1888 they purchased the hotel, Farmers Home, and livery stable in Logan. The Hills remodeled the hotel in 1896 and made it into a two-story building and re-named it the New Hill Hotel. The Hill Hotel was later known as the Logan House and is presently owned by Jake Noel.
Due to Mrs. Hill's failing health, they leased their hotel and livery stable and moved back to their farm two miles north of Logan, building a two-story frame house in 1902. Amanda died May 17, 1903.
John G. married again November 4, 1904 to Harriet Stein Smith who had two boys: Roy and William, from a previous marriage. In 1910 the Hills adopted an orphan girl, Mamie.
