John Thomas' parents were James W and Catherine (Gray) Patterson. In 1855 in
McNairy County TN, John married Emeline Brown, daughter of Isaac and Millie
(Dunn) Brown, formerly of North Carolina.
In 1862 John enlisted in Company C, 32nd Illinois Infantry, United States Army.
He was wounded at Shiloh, recovered, was honorably discharged and returned home.
In 1881 the family moved to White County Arkansas.

Two children died in infancy.
