OBITUARY

Margaret McClung, wife of Samuel McClung, deceased, died at her home in Astoria at 11:15 p.m. July 12, 1898. The deceased was born in Augusta Co., VA, Dec. 14, 1816. Her maiden name was Haffner. At about the age of eighteen she united with the German Reform church. June 11, 1840 she was united in marriage to Samuel McClung, to them were born four children, two sons, Andrew and Granville, and two daughters, Mrs. Wm. H. Merrill, and Mrs. Falkenstein, deceased. In the autumn of 1852 Samuel McClung and family in company with Thos. Bryan and family, Daniel Haffner and family moved in wagons from Augusta county VA, to Fulton county IL, arriving at Astoria on the sixth day of November. They settled on a farm about three miles southeast of Astoria where they continued to reside until they moved to Astoria. In 1853, Mr. and Mrs. McClung united with the United Brethern church under the labors of Rev. O. F. Smith, and remained faithful members and earnest Christians to the close of life. Grandmother, as she was familiarly called, was a noble type of Christian womanhood, blessed with a good physical organization, made strong by active industry. She possessed a good mind, clear judgement and great evenness of temperment. Up to within a few days of her death she wrote letters to her friends, read her church paper and local news every week. The gentleness of her nature and sweetness of her spirit won for her a large circle of friends who mourn the departure of one so greatly loved. Her funeral will occur at the U.B. church tomorrow, Thursday, at 10:00 a.m., conducted by her pastor, J. M. Poulton.

Retyped from the Astoria Argus, Thursday, July 14, 1898 issue.

She was buried in Astoria Cemetary, Fulton Co., Illinois.
