AUGUSTA, Ga. - Mr. Leon Tharpe died on Friday, July 6. 2007. He was the son of the late Eugene Tharpe and the late Minnie Tanner Tharpe; his sister, Myra Reed preceded him in death. Mr. Tharpe was a veteran of The United States Air Force, serving during the Korean Conflict. The family will receive friends at The Poteet Funeral Homes, West Chapel, 3686 Wheeler Road, 706-860-0009, on Sunday, July 8, 2007 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted in the funeral home chapel on Monday, July 9, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. The committal service, with Military Honors, will follow at Westover Memorial Park. Mr. Tharpe is survived by his wife of more than 38 years, Mrs. Betty Tharpe; daughters, Linda Deshane, Sue Woods, Cinder Sullivan, Cindy Burke, Donna Clary, Kelly Ikner, Misty Kilpatrick; sons, Johnny Hurt, Roger Hurt, Joe Kilpatrick, Bobby Kilpatrick, Scott Tharpe, Sean Tharpe; sisters, Barbara Jean Hall, Shirley Chavous, Linda Jessup, a brother, Bud Tharpe; twenty three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren. Born in Wrightsville Georgia, Mr. Tharpe had spent most of his adult life in the Augusta area. He was a member of the American Legion Post 63 and VFW Post 3200 where he had served as a commander in the mid 1980's. For memorials, the family suggests the Blue Goose Nursing Center at the VA Hospital. Pallbearers serving are John Durst, Carl Gaskin, Junior Bagley, Delmus Hilburn, Michael Tharpe, and Don Tharpe. These gentlemen are asked to meet at the funeral home on Monday, July 9 at 10:30 a.m. The Poteet Funeral Homes, West Chapel, 3686 Wheeler Road, 706-860-0009, is in charge of the funeral arrangements.
