Funeral services for Dave Kaufman, 54, of Salmon were held 12 September 2001 at the Salmon River Funeral Chapel. He passed away 9 September 2001 at St. Patrick's Hospital in Missoula, Montana. He was born 9 April 1947 in Coffeyville, Kansas, the son of Thomas B. and Vinita Kathleen Kaufman. He moved to a suburb in Chicago as a small boy and to Salmon in 1953 with his parents, by way of Wyoming, Montana and Arizona. He attended school in Salmon. Dave worked on Deep Creek Road and worked for Brown's on the Old Hayes Road at the head of Boyle Creek. He was sent to Vietnam to do his Army time and was honorably discharged from the Army. When he came home he went to work on a couple of odd jobs then went to work for Quinton Snook in the woods and in the shop. He married Diane Matthews and bought the house that was his ongoing residence to the end. He bought his first Bobcat with the idea it might make him a living someday. Dave dissolved his marriage and he and Diane parted, though they remained friends all through the years. Dave acquired more small equipment as he went along. He was the Little Machine Operator in the area. He was well known to most of the valley contractors and a lot of others. A year or so ago, he fought a winning battle with Hodgkin's Disease and had tested clean. Now he slipped "A Black Deuce" in the form of an acute leukemia, which is fast, furious and fatal, where there is no known cure. Dave drove himself to St. Patrick's Hospital in Missoula, Montana to check in. He is survived by his brother, Thomas J. (Mary) Kaufman and son and also various relatives throughout the United States and his many friends, also some super good ladies like LaVonne Richie and Tina Russell. He was preceded in death by his parents. Burial was in the Salmon Cemetery.
