Logan Eugene "Toby" Burket Sr., 81, of Kinsinger Road, Martinsburg, formerly of Claysburg, died Saturday at The Village at Morrisons Cove.
He was born in Claysburg, son of the late Logan E. and Nellie (Cowher) Burket. He married Virginia Ann Corl April 11, 1950, in Winchester, Va.
Surviving are his wife; a son, Logan Burket Jr. of Martinsburg; and a sister in California.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Candace Ann Claycomb.
Logan was a graduate of Greenfield-Kimmel High School and the Altoona School of Commerce. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, ranked as corporal, serving as a sharpshooter during the Asian-Pacific Theater, stationed in the Philippines with the 656th tank destroyer battalion. Before going to Japan for bombing, he was a personal driver for Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower. He worked for the U.S. Civil Service Commission in 1941. After his service time, he worked for Lingenfelter Dodge/Chrysler, then retired from SKF in 1985 after many years of dedicated work.
He was a member of Faith Baptist Church, Altoona, WWII Memorial Foundation, Mount Vernon Historical Society, Colonial Williamsburg Society, National Rifle Association and the Reagan Memorial Library. He enjoyed chair caning, woodworking and lawn work.
Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. today and 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral service Monday, Jan. 7, 2008, at S. Gerald Weaver Funeral Home, Woodbury, with Dr. Gary G. Dull, pastor, officiating. Interment at Claysburg Union Cemetery.
