Obituary

Ervin W. “Bud” Berry, 84, of Memphis, MO, died at the Scotland County Memorial Hospital, Memphis, MO, January 8, 2000. The oldest son born to Tina May (Holyman) and Silas Wright Berry, he was born on May 1, 1915. He graduated from Tilden High School in Oakwood, MO. On October 10, 1940, he was married to Susie Pauline Dean. He worked at the International Shoe Company in Hannibal, MO, until being drafted into the Army in 1943. He served three years and was honorably discharged in 1946. Upon discharge from the Army, he and his wife moved to the Shelbina, MO, area where they engaged in farming. Later, returning to the Hannibal area, they became involved in the foster care program, providing care to many foster children. He and his family moved to Memphis, MO, in 1976. Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife; two sisters; and two brothers. Survivors include two sons: Gene and his wife, Roni of Gorin, MO, and Ernie of Palmyra, MO; one sister, Lillian Bowen of Hannibal, MO; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews, as well as numerous foster children. Funeral services were held January 11, 2000, in the Gerth Funeral Chapel in Memphis, MO, with the Reverend Jim Campbell officiating.
Serving as pallbearers were Boot Bass, Bill Bass, Tracey Ross, Vernon Howard, Melissa Jordon, and Pat Hudson, Jr. Honorary bearers were Jim Beer, William Bass, Mert McCarty, Hughie Cline, and Bill Harrelson. Military graveside services were provided by the Wallace W. Gillespie Memorial Post #4958 of Memphis, MO, followed by interment in the Brock Cemetery, Scotland County, MO. A memorial fund has been established. Arrangements were handled by Gerth Funeral Service from their Memphis, MO chapel.
