Doris Harper Ashley of Crowville, La. died January 8, 2008 at her residence after a lengthy illness. Services will be held Thursday, January 10 at the Crowville Baptist Church under the direction of Gill First National Funeral Home of Winnsboro. Services will be officiated by Dr. Keith Dowden and Rev. Jimmy Harper. Internment will follow in the Crowville Masonic Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 5-7 p.m. at the Crowville Baptist Church. Mrs. Ashley was born August 22, 1929, in Franklin Parish where she was a lifelong resident and active community leader.

She owned and operated a retail clothing business for 15 years. During her retirement, she assisted in the creation of and served on the board of the Crowville Fire District and the Richardson Community Center. Many of her extensive volunteer efforts were focused on the promotion of agricultural education. She served on the board of the Northeast Louisiana Ag-Council and chaired the Louisiana Cotton Wives Association. She was also active in the Farm Bureau and Franklin Parish LSU Extension Service activities. Mrs. Ashley was a member of the First Baptist Church of Crowville for fifty-eight years where she served as church hostess.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Carl M. Ashley, Jr.; her parents Arthur Harris and Lillie B. Pylant Harper, sisters Mary Maurice Harper Craft and Mattie Gertrude Harper McDuffie, and brothers James Marion Harper and Arthur Asberry Harper. Mrs. Ashley is survived by a son, Gale Lynn Ashley and his wife, Jeanette of Center, Tex., and daughters, Pamela Delaine Ashley of Crowville and Tammie Ashley McDaniel and her husband, Jack of Oak Ridge; grandsons, David Carl Ashley, U.S. Army 1st Lt. Michael Lynn Ashley, and Richard Keith Ashley; granddaughters Lauren Elizabeth McDaniel Brandon and Meredith Ashley McDaniel Dixon; great-granddaughters Morganne Elise Ashley and Eden Elizabeth Dixon and great-grandsons Jackson Warfield Brandon and Samuel Harper Brandon; brothers Alvin Copeland Harper of Lafayette and Hollis Eugene Harper of Denham Springs.

Pallbearers will be James Cupit, Stephen Dupont, Donnie Harper, David McDuffie, Tim Pylant.
