Ashley McClure Bell, youngest son of Washington Lovett Bell and the former Martha Jane Gaston, was born on the 22nd of August 1850 in Madison, Mississippi. Shortly after his birth, his family moved to Hamburg, Arkansas; where his father owned a large plantation.

On April 24th 1873, Ashley Bell married Miss Mary Carter Bolling, daughter of James Carter Bolling and the former Mary Cecilia Raynal. His brother, George, had married Mary's sister, Annastasia. Ashley and Mary Carter would have seven known children:

Ashley Bolling (1876-1947)
Martha Gaston "Mattie" (1879-1903)
Harry Washington (1879-1880)
Merton Ercle (1885-1955)
