Mary Ann Hale Birch

What a good lady who was full of grit & determination and a great example to her posterity! Mary Ann Hale, daughter of Thomas Hale and Ann Wilkes, was born 23 December 1827 at Grits Green, West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England and christened 9 March 1828. Little is known of her early life.

On 12 April 1847 she married James Birch, son of William Birch and Phoebe Craddock at the church in the Chapelry of Great Bar in the county of Staffordshire, England. They joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on 9 April 1849. With the help of the Church's Perpetual Emigration Fund in 1856 they left England and emigrated to America on the ship "Enoch Train". James' father, William came with them. The first handcart company to cross the plains of America was the Edmund Ellsworth Company and they joined this company. Mary Ann and James had three children and Mary Ann was also with child. James died while crossing the plains.

When the little family arrived in Salt Lake City, Utah, James' father, William, died three months later. Just 9 days after William died, Mary gave birth to her and James 4th child. Their children were: Thomas, Mary Ann, Edward J and now James (named after his father).

After arriving in Utah, Mary Ann married James' older brother, Richard Birch in a civil ceremony sometime between 1856 and 1858. Later, on 19 December 1859, in his office next to the Beehive House in Salt Lake City, Brigham Young officiated in a ceremony which further solemnized their vows. However Mary Ann was married to Richard "for time only". (See book: Remembering David and Nancy And Their Family p.4 -by Jesse Dean Birch & Twila Davis Bird). How many of her posterity would have been able to withstand all the trials that Mary Ann went through and remain strong enough to give birth to and raise a total of 10 children (4 to Mary Ann & James Birch, then 6 to Mary Ann & Richard Birch). She was Richard's second wife. Mary Ann and Richard's children were: William, John, Mary Jane, David, Elizabeth Ellen and Samuel. They lived in Mill Creek, Coalville and Hoytsville, Utah for 27 years.

By 1885, six of Mary Ann Hale Birch's seven sons had either moved or were planning on moving to the Upper Snake River Valley in Idaho Territory. She decided to join them and a couple years later at the age of 60 years old she died on 6 June 1887 in Wilford, Fremont County, Idaho Territory, United States and was buried in the Wilford Cemetery.
