Joseph Payson Foster

Joseph P. Foster, who died at the residence of his son, Albert B. Foster in Grout, on the 30th Oct., was born in (Ashford, son of Jesse & Lucy) Connecticut, Aug. 27, 1806. In h} younger days, he removed with his parents to Massachusetts, and from there to New York state. At Lockport. N. Y., in 1829 he was married to Elizabeth Thurston, and they removed to Michigan in 1843, residing near Romeo until 1881, when they came to Gladwin. Mr. Foster since resided with his son Albert in Grout. Mr. F. and family were pioneers of Macomb County. A journey from New York state to Michigan at the time they came to this state was no ordinary affair. Railroads were not then in operation, and it took from two to three days to come from Detroit to Romeo. His wife, who resides with her daughter, Mrs. J. A. Swan at this place, two sons (A. B. of this county and one in California), and four daughters who reside in this state survive. Mr. F. A son. Jubal A., who served five years as deputy clerk and was elected five terms as county clerk of Calaveras county. Cal., died in 1886.

Deceased was for many years a professor of religion, formerly connected with the M. E. church and at the time of his death a member of the Christian church. He lived a life of purity in deed and purpose. Funeral services were conducted Friday from the Grout schoolhouse by Rev. A. A Stevens. Gladwin County Record 11/8/1889
