United States Army General. Son of President Ulysses S. Grant. Accompanied his father through much of General Grant's Civil War campaigns, often coming under hostile fire himself. Graduating from West Point in 1871, he served as an aide-de-camp to Lt. Gen. Philip Sheridan. He participated in exploration expeditions to the Yellowstone area and the Black Hills, and fought in the 1878 Bannock Indian War. After taking leave of the Army to travel abroad with his parents, and to serve as a secretary to his dying father, he returned to the Army at the onset of the Spanish-American War. Promoted Brigadier General, he commanded the district of San Juan, Puerto Rico, and fought in the Philippines. When he died in 1912, it was revealed he had also suffered throat cancer like his father.
