Gwen married Frederick C. Harris on December 24, 1934 at Monroe, Nebraska. She attended Monroe Public Schools and received her B.S. degree in Education from Midland College in Fremont.

Gwen first taught the third and fourth grades at Monroe Public School in 1934. After her marriage to Frederick, she was a homemaker until her children reached school age. In March 1950, she returned to teaching at District 44, where she taught kindergarten through eighth grade. In 1957, she went to District 13, Butler County, and again taught kindergarten through eighth grade. She came to Columbus in 1961 as principal and third grade instructor at Field School. She then taught third grade at North Park School from 1972 until her retirement in 1978.

Gwen was a member of the Federated Church, where she was an elder and had served on various committees, including the Women's Fellowship. She was a charter member of the Book Review Club, the local Garden Club and Elks Club. Gwen was a member of the Lambda Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary teachers sorority. She was a member of the Harmony Chapter # 13, Eastern Star and holds a PTA life membership. Gwen was an active volunteer with the Columbus Gray Ladies and a lifetime member of the American Red Cross.
