Mrs. Chaney M. Orvis Passes Away at Ripe Old Age.

At three thirty o'clock last Monday morning "Grandma Orvis", as she has been called for many years, passed away after an illness of about three weeks duration, although her health had been much poorer than usual for many months.

Chaney M. Sweet was born in Cattarangus county, New York, September 25, 1842, and passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Job D.J. Semler, Sargent, Nebraska on April 22, 1929, at the age of 86 years, 6 months and 27 days.
In her girlhood days she moved with her parents to Durand, Illinois, and on April 24,1859, she was married to John R. Orvis, at Monroe, Wisconson. They lived on a farm in Illinois until 1863 when they moved to Fayette, Iowa, where Mr. Orvis engaged in the general merchantile business. In the summer of 1878 they came overland in a covered wagon to Custer County, Nebraska, arriving here August 1st and located on a homestead which was located one mile north and four miles west of Sargent. The town of West Union was founded on land adjoining this homestead. There they stayed until the year 1903 when they came to Sargent and made their home for awhile and later moved back to the farm. In 1907 they moved back to Sargent and this has been home ever since. Mr. Orvis passed away March 23rd, 1910.

Mr. and Mrs. Orvis were the parents of eleven children, six of whom preceded the mother in death. Those surviving are Laura E. Whaley, Lillie B. Semler, James A. Orvis, George V. Orvis and Burt L. Orvis. Besides these there are left to mourn her death thirty-five grand children, sixty-five great grand children and three great great grand children.

Mrs. Orvis was a lover of home and enjoyed visiting with all her friends . She would often say, "I like everybody." Her life like all others was not free from some sorrow, yet she had the talent of hiding all gloom away and meeting everyone with a smile. She could see the good in all. A number of years ago she became a Christian and united with the Christian church at Sargent. It was at this church that the funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, April 23rd and the pastor, Mrs Rachel Boa**, preached the sermon. Interment was made in the West Union cemetery.
