Indian Wars Medal of Honor Recipient. He was issued the award on November 8, 1882 for his actions as a private in the US Army Signal Corps on September 11, 1881 at Fort Apache Arizona Territory. He joined the US Army in 1879 and was assigned to Fort Apache on the Western frontier. When Fort Apache was besieged by Geronimo's warriors on September 11, 1881, he managed to escape and rode to Fort Thomas and brought soldiers to aid Fort Apache. In 1883 he was discharged at the rank of sergeant and became a rancher and served in the Arizona Territorial government. In 1907 he joined the US Forestry Service and was involved in rescuing Texas longhorn cattle from extinction. He died at the age of 78. His Medal of Honor citation simply reads: "Bravery in action."
