John William, known as Will, was the son of Henry Clay & Martha (Johnson) Abbott.
Will, who had never married, lived in Neosho his entire life and had become well known as the owner of the Abbott Bakery that he had inherited from his father. He retired around 1914.
He was a patient at St. John's Hospital in Joplin when he died at 9:30 a.m. on Jan. 27, 1944, from Pulmonary Edema due to Chronic Myocarditis. He had lived 77 years, 7 months, & 4 days. His only surviving relative was a sister, Mrs. Nell James, the informant on his death certificate.
Will was well liked, and news about his death spread throughout the community as various newspapers reported his death.

He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Frank James, of Joplin, formerly Miss Nellie Abbott. Deceased was a son of Henry Clay Abbott, one of Neosho's pioneer citizens, who for many years operated a bakery and restaurant on Spring street. Following the death of his father, Will Abbott acquired the business and also operated it for several years. Mr. Abbott's brother, Frank, Bose, Ed and Ollie, are all dead. He was never married.
By close attention to business Mr. Abbott acquired a modest, competency enough at least to care for him in his old age. He was of a genial disposition, friendly and cheerful, and will be greatly missed by his old friends.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at the Bigham Chapel. Burial at I.O.O.F. Cemetery."

His parents, Mr. and Mrs. H.C. Abbott, came to Neosho in Civil War days and, about 1871, the father began operation of a bakery, later taken over by the son. The original bakery and its equipment were owned by the son at the time of his death. His own business had been conducted in a building which he had constructed and still owned. He had retired about 30 years ago.
Besides the sister, a niece, Miss Roemilta James of the same address, and a nephew, Corporal Abbott A. James, with a coast artillery anti-aircraft unit in North Africa, also survive."
