His parents were Henry and Jemima Hieatt Cooley. He and his siblings were orphaned when he was 13. The family was living in Metamora township, Franklin Co. Indiana at the time. Jabez was raised by the family of Amos Martindale. He was a Civil War veteran. He farmed but also was a Methodist minister for many years. The family moved to Kansas in 1885 and at some point Jabez became a Quaker and continued in that faith until his death in 1909.
