Jessie Maybelle Brown, 99, Augusta, died Thursday, June 13, 1996.

Her services will be 10 a.m. Monday, June 17, First Methodist Church, Augusta, with Rev. Vern Bowers officiating. She will be buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Augusta.

Brown was born to Charles and Alice Berger in Sedgwick County on Feb. 26, 1897 and raised on a farm east of Douglass. As a graduate of Douglass High School in 1914, she was the sole survivor of her class when she attended it's scheduled eightieth reunion in 1994.

She taught in country schools, beginning in 1914 until her marriage to Leonard Brown on June 10, 1923 near Bloomington, who preceded her in death in 1981. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Unruh in 1994.

She returned to teaching for five years during World War II, and was a member of the First Methodist Church of Augusta, United Methodist Women, the Twentieth Century Club, and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

She is survived by her sons, Sidney Devere Brown and his wife Ruth of Norman, Okla., Stanley Reeves Brown and his wife Sandra of Leonardville, MD., sister, Katherine Alley of Derby; brother, Woodrow Berger and his wife Doris of Wichita; nine grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren.

A memorial has been established with the United Methodist Church, Augusta.
