Alexander "Alex" Balla was born on the 24 October 1886 in Easeny, Sanabalas, Hungary, the son of István Balla (1858-1930) and his first wife, Eszter Szabó (1857-1925). As a young boy, he worked as a hostler (or stableman) for an Army officer that served with his father. After his father abandoned his family and came to the United States, Alexander's mother moved herself and her children to Budapest.
In about 1906, Alexander left Hungary for America along with a friend. In exchange for their tickets, they worked aboard the ship that brought them to America. Soon after his arrival, he settled in New York and got a job working on the Brooklyn Bridge. On the 9 September 1907, he married Julia Molnar (1885-1962), a Hungarian émigré and daughter of Frank Molnar and Esther Haydu, in Brooklyn, New York.
Alexander and Julia had ten children between 1908 and 1926: Alex, Ima, the twins Frank and John (who both died young), Irene, Esther, Arpod, Henry, Aline, and Ethel. While still in New York, they lived in Brooklyn, Rochester, and LeRoy. Before the birth of their sixth child, Alexander moved his family to Sabine Co., Texas. They lived in Pineland and Brookeland townships of Sabine County. Before the birth of their last child, they moved to Browndell, Jasper Co., Texas.
Throughout his life, Alexander worked as a laborer and farmer. He and his wife lived in California for a while before returning to Texas. Alexander died on the 15 February 1950 in Beaumont, Jefferson Co., Texas. He was buried on the 17 February 1950 in Old Hardin Cemetery. His wife, Julia, died twelve years later; and was buried beside him in Old Hardin Cemetery.
