Ida May was the daughter of Samuel and Charity Ann Smith Conn.

THE NEVADA JOURNAL, September 27, 1973. "MRS. IDA MAY BACKOUS. Funeral services will be4 held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. from the Ryan Funeral Home in Nevada for Ida Backous, 91, who died early this morning at the Oak Park Manor Nursing Home where she had been a patient the past 3 months. She was born April 1, 1882 to Samuel and Charity Conn near Maxwell and had lived in Story County her entire life time. She is survived by two sons, Cecil of Boone and Forrest of Des Moines; one daughter, Mrs. Andrew Bates of Ames; eleven grandchildren; thirty-seven great grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Jessie Bobo of Nevada. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, one son and her husband, Arthur who died in 1942. Officiating the services will be rev. Robert Baker. Burial will be in the Nevada Cemetery."

THE AMES DAILY TRIBUNE, Friday, September 28, 1973. "SERVICES SATURDAY FOR I. M. BACKOUS. Mrs. Ida May Backous, 91, died early Friday morning at the Oak Park manor Nursing Home. Services are Saturday from the Ryan Funeral Home at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Robert Baker officiating. Burial is in the Nevada Cemetery. Born April 1, 1882 near Maxwell, Mrs. Backous was a lifetime resident of Story County. Surviving are two sons, Cecil, Boone, and Forrest, Des Moines; a daughter, Mrs. Andrew Bates, 1307 Kellogg Ave.; 11 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren; six great great grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Jessie Bobo, Nevada. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, a son Harold, and her husband Arthur."
