Thus another of the few remaining pioneers of this county have gone to his quiet rest. Mr. Scranton was born in Granville, Washington, NY. In 1796 he learned the trade of mason. On attaining his majority he married Miss Polly Cummings and removed to the wilderness of the Genesee, on the land he occupied till within a few months of his death. During his long residence he was one of our sterling citizens. Though never prominent as a public man, in the modern sense of the word, his counsel was sought by his neighbors and his uniform idea of right and common sense views gave him a large influence among all classes of society. Industrious, intelligent and strictly honest, his life in all particulars, is a model for every citizen of a democratic government. In all walks of life he illustrated a true manhood. As a husband and father he was kind and considerate, spending his leisure hours in his family circle as a neighborhood, accomodating and a peacemaker-as a citizen, faithful to all his obligations and ready to do his part in all public enterprises. Mr. Scranton leaves a widow and a family of grown up children to lament his loss, but they have left to them his example, far more priceless then wordly possessions.
Warsaw - 21 Dec. 1871
Mr. Scranton was the son of George and Edee Baker Scranton. Edee was the daughter of Rev. Benjamin Baker. On Dec. 28, 1816, Orrin married Polly Cummins, daughter of Ethel and Rosanna Cummins.
