Warren Davis, a retired and highly respected farmer and for seventy-five years, a resident of this county, died at his home on the corner of John and Jefferson at half past 10 o'clock this morning. He was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Allen Davis, who were married in Kentucky. They came to this county in 1832 and settled in Brown township, where the deceased was born, seventy-five years ago in a log cabin, which has long been torn away. One half of the cabin was floored with rough puncheon and the other half had no floor. One peculiar thing worthy of note in this connection is that an elm sprout grew in the part of the cabin which had no floor in it, after the family had abandoned it. When the cabin was torn away this small elm bush was left undisturbed. It is now grown to be a large elm. The parents of the deceased rode here from Kentucky on horseback. Later Thomas Davis became one of the wealthy and leading citizens of the county.
The subject of this sketch lived until the earlier part of his life in Browns township. While living there he was married to Margaret Smith and to them were born ten children, two of whom died in infancy. The wife with eight children survives. The children are: Mrs. Taylor Alston of Veedersburg, Mrs. Thomas Swisher of Mace, Mrs. Elizabeth Rogers, who is living on the home place in Brown township; Mrs. Elmer Clark, William A. Davis, Charley Davis, and Mrs, Edgar Grimes of this city and Mrs. Samuel Demoret of south of town.
For the past thirty-five years the deceased has lived in this city or near it. He came here in 1894. While living on a farm in Union township before coming here he resided on the Greencastle road. He was a member of the First Baptist church and was a full Mason until a few years ago. Be sides the near relatives mentioned above there are thirty-five grandchildren to mourn for him.
His death has been expected for several days and was due to aggravated case of heart disease and stomach trouble. The funeral will occur Monday afternoon at the residence at 2 o'clock.
