[Add A Photo]
This photo was taken in the summer or fall of 1918, shortly after the birth of Ella's first child, Marjorie, who grew up to very closely resemble her mother. A second child, Carl, was born in 1921 but died shortly thereafter. Ella's husband, John, divorced and left her when Marjorie was four. When a judge asked Marjorie whom she wanted to live with, Marjorie chose her dad because the divorce had left her mother destitute. To Marjorie's shock, the court then blocked Ella from ever seeing her daughter again. Worse, John had his ex-wife committed to an asylum. It took years before the doctors there agreed that Ella has always been perfectly sane and healthy but deeply depressed, having permanently lost her home, her husband and her children. Brokenhearted, she died soon after before leaving the asylum she had been committed to.
