Prior to enlisting in the Confederate Army, Robert is a stock farmer as indicated in the 1860 census. He served in Debray's Battalion Texas Calvary.
Between 1862 and 1872, they had seven children: Francis Allen; Virginia Allen; William Allen ; Anna Allen; UnNamed twin to Anna; Isabell Allen; and Bertha Allen
The 1870 census of Cistern, Fayette, Texas lists Robert as a medical student with real estate valued at $1000 and personal property at $200. They are living next door to Virginia's brother, Duncan Carmichael.
In 1879, Robert, a widow, and his family are living in Coleman County, Texas until his death in 1883. Dr. Allen died in Thrifty, Brown County, Texas making rounds when he caught pneumonia and died in his buggy.
