James enlisted in the US Marine Corps on September 4, 1968 in Milwaukee WI. He arrived in Vietnam on March 12 1969 where he was assigned to and served with Company I, 3d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.
On June 19, while under the operational control of the 2d Battalion, the platoon’s patrol base near Hill 112 near the vicinity of the Dong Bich village complex the in Hieu Duc District of Quang Nam Province was attacked by the enemy. The perimeter was hit with a volley of B-40 rocket propelled grenade and mortar fire. Three Marines were killed and two were wounded during the attack, one of the casualties was PFC James Ahrens who was killed by multiple fragmentation wounds from the hostile enemy fire.
