Johnnie Mae "Honey" Cansler was born on September 21, 1947 in Birmingham, Alabama to the union of Johnnie Lee and Belle Jemmison Daniels.

She accepted Christ at an early age and received her early education in Alabama. In her early teens, she moved with her family to Cleveland where she attended the Cleveland Public Schools, ultimately graduating from East High School.

Not long after graduation, Honey walked across the street from her house into Wright's Food Store which was previously located at 100th Street and Cedar. There she met Clayton Cansler and it was love at first sight. Clayton could not get any work done because he was too busy looking to see if Johnnie Mae was outside. On April 29, 1966, they were joined in holy matrimony and their union was blessed with four children. For years, Honey was devoted solely to being a wife and mother. She later entered into the workforce where she worked for nearly twenty years in housekeeping at Holiday Inn Hotels.

Johnnie Mae was a committed member of The Historic Greater Friendship Baptist Church since the early 1970's. She was a faithful member of the choir where she sang soprano. She loved her church, her choir and especially Pastor Howard. She really, really, really loved to sing! It was no surprise when she would call someone on the telephone and sing to them at any time of the day!

On Tuesday, May 8, 2007, she departed this life at her home. Although her parents preceded her in death, she was blessed with a loving stepmother - Mattie Daniels of Birmingham, Alabama.

Those left to mourn and cherish her memory include her loving husband Clayton; children, Clayton J. Cansler, Jr. of Houston, Texas, Melvin (Addis) Cansler of Cleveland, Ohio, Tresa Cansler of Cleveland, Ohio and Maurice K. (fiancée Denise Laba) Cansler of Cleveland, Ohio; six sisters, Maxine Fomby and Dorothy McNeil, both of Cleveland, Ohio, Rose Daniels-Stewart of Atlanta, Georgia, Beverly Daniels-Clark, Sandra Fay Daniels-Williams and Janice Reese, all of Birmingham, Alabama; four brothers, Edward Smith of Cleveland, Ohio, Walter Jones, Jr. of Washington, D.C., Kenny Daniels and Melvin Kidd, both of Birmingham, Alabama; seven grandchildren, Ashley Ellis, Clayton Cansler-Overmyer, Monae Cansler, Clayton Cansler III, Amani Ali, Whitney Hartfield, and Malik Cansler; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends in Cleveland, Ohio, Washington, D.C., Birmingham, Alabama and Atlanta, Georgia.
