He accompanied Washington during his crossing of the Delaware River and fought at the battle of Trenton, and at the battle of Brandywine. Weedon also commanded five Virginia regiments quartered at Valley Forge during the severe winter of 1777-78. During the siege of Yorktown, Weedon led the Virginia militia at Gloucester Point, seizing that strategic position located directly across Yorktown on the opposite bank of the York River. This prevented Cornwallis's escape across the York River thus sealing the fate of Cornwallis, forcing his surrender of all the British forces. This effectively ended America's war for independence. After the treaty of Paris was signed, actually ending the war, Weedon resigned his commission. In 1785 he was elected mayor of Fredericksburg, Virginia. George Weedon was also the brother-in-law of Hugh Mercer, another general in the Continental Army. Weedon's wife was Catharine Gordan. Catharine's sister, Isabella Gordan, married General Hugh Mercer.
