Helen was the only child of Ephraim Spencer Garrett, 1 and his second wife, Francis Kathleen Robinson. Helen was born in Chicago, lived for a time in San Francisco (which she loved) and graduated from Birmingham High School, Birmingham, Alabama. She earned a bachelor degree in English, with a minor in history, and then her DDS in 1943 from the dental school at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, becoming an oral surgeon. Helen married Reuben Guest Dennard, Jr. on April 23, 1948 in Atlanta. She retired from her dental practice in 1956 when the family moved to California. She was preparing to return to school to freshen up her dental skills when she died suddenly at the age of 51. Her children miss her to this day.
