|One of Trumbull's pencil sketches done in preparation for Stephen Hopkins' portrait in "The Declaration of Independence". This drawing is actually of Stephen Hopkins' son, Rufus. Trumbull was insistent on obtaining the accurate likeness of each individual depicted in his history paintings. If the person was deceased, as in this case (Stephen Hopkins died in 1785), Trumbull would attempt to gain a likeness from a prior portrait or a close family member|
