Matternes, Ph.D., Archaeologist and Co-Author Terri Gillett, M.H.P. , Historian and Co-Author Chris Espenshade , Principal Investigator; North Carolina Archaeological Council Publication Number 29, 2010This grave is one of those discovered in 2007 during construction on the new entrance to Mercy Hospital in Charlotte. The remains in the Spratt Cemetery were excavated, disinterred and reinterred at Steele Creek Presbyterian Church in 2007 along with all original headstones located during the excavation of Spratt cemetery. The resource above gives detailed information about the archaeological find and the graves and the interment ceremony at Steele Creek church. This family had another cemetery relocation. It was the Barnett-Smartt-Spratt Cemetery at 10256 Old Nations Ford Rd. Those headstones are located at stele Creek but the graves were moved to Sharon Memorial Park in 1987.
