John was the husband of Rebecca J. Coiner. On April 17th 1861 he enlisted in the Civil War at Fishersville and was a Private in CO H 5th Va Infantry "Stonewall Brigade". He was mustered in May 18th 1861 at Harper's Ferry. He hired a substitute on April 28 1862 at Winchester, CO A 52nd VA Infantry.
