NEW CARLISLE — Austin K. Ford left behind memories of loyalty, friendship and graciousness.

"He was a very likeable young man — the kind of kid that would give you a high-five as you were going down the hallway," Tecumseh Middle School Assistant Principal Cecil Foley said.

Many who knew the 13-year-old called his Tuesday death tragic.

"I think the hardest part is the kids were doing absolutely nothing wrong," Principal Brad Martin said. "This kid paid the ultimate price for doing nothing wrong."

Authorities said Ford was walking home from the city pool with friends Friday evening when a Blazer, driven by Danny Whitfield, 54, of New Carlisle drove onto the sidewalk in the 400 block of West Lake Street.

The vehicle struck Ford, who was taken to Miami Valley Hospital then to Children's Medical Center in Dayton.

He died at Children's from the injuries he suffered.

The teen finished eighth grade in the spring and looked forward to high school, having talked to teachers about an interest in trying out for the baseball team, Martin said.

"Sometimes it boggles your mind that things like this happen, especially when they happen to children who have their whole lives in front of them," Foley said.

Ford, a winner of the National Physical Fitness Award in his gym class, was an avid bowler, Martin said.

The middle school had counselors on hand Wednesday to help students cope with their classmate's loss, and counselors will be available on an individual basis in coming days, Martin said.

Ford's close friends organized a candlelight vigil to begin at 6:30 p.m. today (Thursday) at Sacred Heart Church, 476 N. Scott St.
