He grew up in Tyler where he was an Eagle Scout and winner in the National Science Fair.

He graduated in 1966 from Robert E. Lee High School, attended Tyler Junior, and graduated in 1970 from Baylor University where he was president of his senor Class, and a member of Phi Delta Epsilon and Circle K International.

He later graduated from Baylor Medical School, then specialized in orthopedic surgery at Scott and White, and had a fellowship of hand micro surgery through University of Southern California.

He was licensed to practice medicine in California, Oklahoma and Texas. He was a Fellow in American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and was named in International Who's Who of Professionals.

He had a private pilot's license for more than 30 years, and was a member of El Toro Baptist Church of Lake Forest, Calif., where he sang in the choir.
